Who would star in a Mirror Images Book 1: The Darkness of Man movie?
Writers are often asked what their characters look like. We put the description down on paper, but readers sometimes want us to be a little more specific. I've been asked, "What actors do you imagine playing your characters?" That's a tough one for me. I suppose some writers would have that nailed down, and for some of my characters I do, but usually I see the character in a whole different way. I create a general outline in my mind, making each character a brand new, unique person. In the interest of answering the question, and because it seemed like a fun idea, I decided to make a list of which actors I could imagine playing my characters.
Please, play along. For those of you who've read my book, why don't you let me know who you can imagine in the roles. Just use the comments section below. In the meantime, this is what I came up with.
Gabe/Cutter -- Either Nikolaj Coster-Waldau who plays Jaime Lannister in Game of Thrones or Colin Farrell. Both have the ability to be the handsome good guy, but also the insane bad guy.
Lisa/Ivy -- I had a hard time with this one. In the book, Lisa is Gabe's coworker, who has been overlooked by him for a long time. She's been a friend, but in a sisterly kind of way. Later, as Ivy, she's a sexy seductress. I'm a big fan of Minka Kelly from Friday Night Lights, so I'll put her in here, or Isla Fisher, who knocked my socks off in Wedding Crashers. Leighton Meester also came to mind after seeing her in Country Strong.
Allie/Alleycat -- This one was easy. Two women came to mind right away. Both Allie and her alter ego, Alleycat, are kind of bitchy, but super hot. And she's a blond. So I immediately thought of Scarlett Johansson and Olivia Wilde. These are two very attractive actresses who i can easily see pulling off the bad girl part.
Charles "Charlie" Burgess -- This guy has to be a boss. A cocky jerk, who's not stunning, but attractive enough that he might catch Allie's attention. How about...maybe Billy Bob Thorton? Or Kevin Spacey. He played a great asshole in Horrible Bosses.
Goody Bones -- The voodoo priest looking scoundrel from the dark side of the mirror. The first guy that came to mind to play this part was Peter Mensah who does a kickass job on the Starz series, Spartacus.
Cloak -- The psychotic, unstoppable assassin from the dark side of the mirror. Who could be better than Ray Park, who has used his martial arts and acting skills in awesome roles like Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode 1, Toad in the X-Men movie, and my personal favorite, Snake Eyes in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra.
T-Nate -- The ex-pro football star stuck on the dark side of the mirror was an easy one. Since I first created the character, I've thought of Ricky from Boyz N The Hood. I've kept Morris Chestnut in mind the whole time.
Sergio -- The L.A. gangster turned stranded survivor on the dark side, Sergio, would need to be a Latino actor, someone who could pull off the nice guy ex-Mexican gangster role. I imagine Michael Peña, who did a great job in the movie End of Watch, playing a tough guy cop who didn't take shit from the local gangs.
Dozier -- The redneck, battle axe swinging tough guy could only be played by a couple of actors out there. I think Ron Pearlman, with his Blade 2 look, would be awesome, but I imagine Dozier being a little younger than he is. Steve Austin could be a good candidate too. I'd be thrilled with either one.
Ty -- Steven Yeun, from The Walking Dead, would be great in this role. I wasn't sure about it until I saw the beating he's taken in season 3. He's pretty bad ass.
The Soothsayer -- High hopes...all of these are, but Morgan Freeman would be really cool in the role of the blind fortune teller with bleached skin.
The Conductor -- The annoying tagalong train conductor who seems to speak a dialect all his own would be a tough character to pull off. For some reason Simon Pegg came to mind. He's just awesome. Shaun of the Dead is one of my favorite comedies. I imagine him with long red hair and a long red beard, wearing dirty train conductor coveralls.
Haylay -- Chris Tucker, Ru Paul, and Wesley Snipes all came to mind for this role. I couldn't help thinking of Snipes' character in To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everyting Julie Newmar!
Belgrave -- The Italian, musclebound, fedora wearing bully would have to be somebody huge and mean. Somebody who commands respect. I think wrestler turned actor and mixed martial artist, Dave Batista, would be great in this role.
Riker -- Belgrave's right-hand man, and Irish bad boy, Riker, is a bit of a challenge. I like Joel Edgerton, who starred in one of my favorite movies of all time, Warrior. His costar in Warrior, Tom Hardy, who also played Bane in the newest Batman movie, would be great as Riker too.
So that's everyone I could think of. Some of those I was really racking my brain with though, so pipe in and let me know what you think. If you haven't read the book yet, what are you waiting for? Read it, then let me know who'd be in the movie. It's fun.
***Update: Ok, I'm writing this update on 4/14/2013, after watching 2 Fast 2 Furious (I'm on kind of a Fast & Furious kick this week). It reminded me of the actor Cole Hauser, who was actually one of the first guys I imagined playing Gabe/Cutter. He's capable of being a regular, cool guy, but also good at playing a bad ass. So I'm adding him below. Also, I've got a thing for Mila Kunis, and was thinking, she could make an excellent Lisa/Ivy.***
Cole Hauser. Could he be Gabe/Cutter? I think he'd be an excellent candidate.
And Mila Kunis as Lisa/Ivy? Hell yeah!
